Four Resolutions for a Healthier Smile

March 3, 2022

It’s never too late to get your smile’s oral health back on track. If you’re committed to having healthier and more attractive looking teeth, here are four simple new year’s resolutions that you can make with the help of our Somerville dentists.

Floss. Every Day

It’s not possible to limit your risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and dental decay without cleaning between your teeth every day. Hate flossing? Opt for a water flosser instead! Water flossing can even reach deep gum pockets where traditional floss can’t.

Stop Chewing on Things

Your fingernails, pencil, or whatever it is you do when you’re sitting behind the wheel or at your desk…your teeth weren’t meant to chew on them. The repetitive habit can lead to specific teeth at the front of your mouth starting to wear down irregularly and prematurely. It’s time to break the habit.

Drink More Water

Water is a natural cleanser. More importantly, there aren’t any acids or natural/artificial sweeteners in it. Drinking water throughout the day keeps your teeth healthy and hydrated, so that you can lower your risk of getting cavities. Plus, it’s calorie free!

Chew Gum with Xylitol in It

Xylitol is a special type of sweetener that actually repels plaque build-up and keeps it from forming on the surface of teeth. Only certain types of sugar free gums have it in their list of ingredients. When you have the option, pick one with “xylitol” on the front of the package. Chew it between meals to limit the bad bacteria that cause tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

And here’s a bonus resolution: Schedule your dental checkups ahead of time. That way you never miss your scale and clean! Call Somersmiles Dental in Somerville today to book your next six-month appointment.
