The 7 most commonly asked questions about sleep dentistry
If you’re thinking about having sleep dentistry, then you’ll be sure to have lots of questions. This is completely natural and a good sign that you are prepared to do the research before you go ahead!
We’ve made it easy by listing the seven most commonly asked questions about sleep dentistry to help you make decisions about your dental care with confidence.
1. What is sleep dentistry?
Sleep dentistry, also known as sedation dentistry, means carrying out dental treatment while the patient is asleep or sedated. This means that even the most anxious patients can undergo dental treatment stress-free.
2. Is it safe?
Sleep dentistry is safe for a wide range of reasons:
- It’s been used for many years and is a tried-and-tested procedure.
- Your dentist will assess you at an initial consultation appointment to understand your state of health and to know if you are fit for the procedure.
- Throughout the process, you will be closely monitored by highly trained staff who have experience in sleep dentistry.
- After the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be monitored. You will be free to go home once staff are satisfied that you are fit to do so
3. What does sleep dentistry feel like for the patient?
There are different types of sedation, so how you feel will depend on which one you have:
- Minimal sedation with nitrous oxide — This will make you feel relaxed and light-headed. You will have some awareness of what’s going on but will have reduced pain sensitivity and are likely to feel detached from your surroundings
- Moderate sedation using oral medication — You will feel sleepy and may drift in and out of consciousness. You will feel deeply relaxed and probably won’t remember much of the procedure
- Deep sedation using IV medication — You will be asleep for the entire procedure or most of it and won’t remember what goes on
4. Will I wake up during the procedure?
If you opt for minimal or moderate sedation, then you will be awake for all or some of your procedure. This isn’t an issue, as you will feel relaxed and you will also have a local anaesthetic to take away any sensations of pain. Under deep sedation, it is unlikely that you will wake up. Rest assured that you will be closely monitored throughout and will benefit from local anaesthesia too.
5. How will I feel after treatment?
After your treatment, you are likely to feel drowsy and possibly confused. These feelings will subside quickly, and staff will be on hand to provide reassurance.
Arrange for a family member or friend to pick you up and take you home afterwards, as you won’t be able to drive.
Depending on the procedure you have had, you may experience some pain or discomfort after the local anaesthesia wears off. Your dentist may prescribe you medication to deal with this or recommend over-the-counter drugs. You may also feel thirsty after your dental procedure. Keep yourself hydrated with water or other clear, non-alcoholic drinks.
6. Can anyone have sleep dentistry?
Sleep dentistry is suitable for all ages and all types of treatment and is ideal for anyone who is nervous of the dentist.
To know if it’s right for you, have a consultation with your dentist who can provide you with advice and guidance.
7. Is it more expensive?
Sleep dentistry can be more expensive because it uses a trained anaesthetist to perform the procedure. But it can still be affordable, thanks to our financing options. Come and talk to us at Somersmiles Dental and we can come up with a plan to suit your budget.
